Tesla and Elon Musk's fortune shrinks by R$148 billion after clash with Trump

Elon Musk's net worth suffered a significant drop this Thursday (5), with a reduction of US$ 26.6 billion, equivalent to R$ 148.8 billion, according to the most recent survey by Forbes magazine. The fall occurred mainly after shares of Tesla, the electric vehicle manufacturer led by Musk, fell 14% on the financial market. Despite the billion-dollar loss, Musk remains at the top of the list of the richest people on the planet, still accumulating a fortune estimated at US$ 387.9 billion (around R$ 2.17 trillion). He remains comfortably ahead of the second-placed Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, who has a net worth of US$ 236.3 billion (R$ 1.32 trillion).  The devaluation movement took place against the backdrop of public tension between Musk and former US President Donald Trump. In strong statements on Thursday, Trump threatened to end subsidies and government contracts signed with companies owned by the South African billionaire. Musk's response was equally explosive. Bill de Blasio criticizes US proposal to classify Brazilian factions as terrorists

Bill de Blasio

Former New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio expressed concern about the United States' attempt to include Brazilian criminal groups, such as Primeiro Comando da Capital (PCC) and Comando Vermelho (CV), on the list of terrorist organizations. He believes that this proposal could be misused for political purposes.

During the 2nd International Seminar on Public Security, Human Rights and Democracy, held in São Paulo, Blasio warned of the risks of this classification, especially if it is adopted in a context of external political interests. The event, organized by the Institute for the Reform of State-Business Relations (IREE) and the IDP, brought together authorities, parliamentarians and representatives of civil society.

Blasio stressed that Latin American countries are right to be concerned about US interference in internal affairs. According to him, there is a risk that legitimate legal tools could end up being distorted to serve political objectives. “If anyone thinks that this type of maneuver cannot happen, they are ignoring the signs,” he stated.

One of the concerns is that by labeling these factions as terrorists, the US government could use maximum security prisons, such as the Cecot prison in El Salvador — intended for criminals classified as terrorists — to hold detainees linked to the PCC and CV.

The Brazilian government has already spoken out against the proposal, claiming that, according to the country's legislation, for an organization to be classified as terrorist, it must have racial, religious or xenophobic motivation — which does not apply to these factions. The position was presented at a technical meeting between representatives of the Ministry of Justice, the Itamaraty and US authorities.

Blasio stressed that security measures must be conducted responsibly and transparently, without leaving room for external pressure that could compromise sovereignty or civil rights.

Magnitsky Act: Possible US sanctions against Alexandre de Moraes increase international tension

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated during a hearing in the US Congress that there is a strong possibility that the future Donald Trump administration will impose sanctions against the Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes. The measure would be based on the Magnitsky Act, which authorizes the US government to punish foreigners involved in corruption or serious human rights violations. Created in 2012 and expanded in 2016, the Magnitsky Act allows sanctions to be imposed unilaterally, without the need for a formal judicial process. Based on reports from international organizations, press reports or testimonies, the US Executive can block assets, freeze bank accounts and prevent individuals from accessing the US financial system. In addition, the law allows the sanctioned individual to be banned from entering the country. This legislation was instituted in response to the death of Sergei Magnitsky, a Russian lawyer who exposed a corruption scheme involving tax authorities ...

Brazil reacts: Council denounces US threat to Supreme Court as attack on national sovereignty

The National Human Rights Council (CNDH) has stated that possible sanctions by the United States against Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes represent a serious violation of national sovereignty. The statement followed recent statements in the US Congress, where Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that Donald Trump's government is considering measures against Moraes. According to the CNDH, these initiatives would be unacceptable, since they would constitute undue interference in Brazil's internal affairs. The entity argued that such an attitude compromises the principles governing diplomatic relations, especially since this involves an authority from Brazil's highest constitutional court. In a statement, the council emphasized that this political move has no precedent in the modern history of international relations between democracies. Rubio's statements came in response to a question from Republican Senator Cory Lee Mills, who referred to alleged judicial pers...
