Mercosur and Canada resume free trade agreement negotiations after years of impasse

What is happening between Mercosur and Canada? After more than a decade of stalled talks, the Mercosur countries (Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay) and Canada announced in September 2025 the formal resumption of negotiations for a free trade agreement. The decision was confirmed at a meeting between representatives of the two blocs during the United Nations General Assembly in New York and represents a strategic step toward strengthening economic ties between South and North America. This move is not just symbolic: it could pave the way for one of the largest trade agreements in the South American region in recent years, with direct impacts on the economies of millions of people—from farmers to small business owners. Why does this agreement matter? A free trade agreement between Mercosur and Canada has the potential to eliminate or reduce tariffs on thousands of products, facilitate investment, increase business competitiveness, and generate new job opportunities. B-2 Spirit strikes Iranian nuclear plants, triggering global alert

The Iranian government has officially confirmed that nuclear facilities on its territory were hit by bombings carried out by a US B-2 Spirit aircraft — one of the most stealthy and advanced aircraft in the world. The attack, according to the Iranian Defense Ministry, took place in the early hours of the morning and caused considerable damage to strategic complexes such as Natanz and Fordow, known for their role in uranium enrichment.

In a statement broadcast live, the ministry spokeswoman described the action as “a hostile and unacceptable act that directly violates national sovereignty and international law.” The same source reported that, to date, there has been no confirmation of deaths, although material losses are “significant.”

A clear message?

The use of the B-2 Spirit — capable of passing through enemy air defenses without being detected — raises suspicions about the magnitude and degree of planning of the operation. Military analysts believe that the bombing targeted infrastructure of high strategic value to Iran's nuclear program, at a time of growing tension between Tehran and Washington.

Unofficial sources close to the U.S. Department of Defense, although they avoid making public statements, indicate that the operation was linked to an escalation in the response to regional threats, especially after the latest missile tests carried out by Iran and its allies in the Middle East.

Silence in Washington, pressure in New York

So far, the White House has not issued any official statement about the attack. However, the international repercussion was immediate. The UN Security Council called for an emergency session, while countries such as Russia and China reacted with strong criticism of the United States, demanding clarifications and condemning the use of force.

Israel and some European nations called for restraint, highlighting the need to avoid a military escalation in the Persian Gulf — one of the most unstable and sensitive regions on the planet.

Tense atmosphere on the streets and on social media

In Tehran and other major Iranian cities, thousands of people took to the streets to protest the attack. Cries of outrage and banners demanding an immediate response from the government took over squares and avenues. On social media, the hashtag #IranUnderAttack is already among the most talked about in the world, with users demanding action from the government and condemning what they call an “imperialist attack”.

The digital repercussion of the attack was instantaneous, with influencers, journalists and experts sharing analyses, videos and images of the alleged bombing.

What now?

International relations experts warn that this could be the biggest breaking point since the death of General Qasem Soleimani in 2020. According to Professor Amir Zandpour, from the University of Tehran, the attack represents a “red line crossed” and should have profound consequences on the region’s geopolitics.

"When a country like the United States directly attacks another state's nuclear facilities, the implications are global. The Iranian response may not come immediately, but it will come," the expert said.

A new chapter begins

The scenario is now unpredictable. With Iran promising retaliation, the international community on high alert and the United States maintaining strategic silence, the world is once again on the brink of a possible major conflict.

Magnitsky Act: Possible US sanctions against Alexandre de Moraes increase international tension

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated during a hearing in the US Congress that there is a strong possibility that the future Donald Trump administration will impose sanctions against the Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes. The measure would be based on the Magnitsky Act, which authorizes the US government to punish foreigners involved in corruption or serious human rights violations. Created in 2012 and expanded in 2016, the Magnitsky Act allows sanctions to be imposed unilaterally, without the need for a formal judicial process. Based on reports from international organizations, press reports or testimonies, the US Executive can block assets, freeze bank accounts and prevent individuals from accessing the US financial system. In addition, the law allows the sanctioned individual to be banned from entering the country. This legislation was instituted in response to the death of Sergei Magnitsky, a Russian lawyer who exposed a corruption scheme involving tax authorities ...

Mercosur: Brazil assumes presidency of Mercosur with new agenda of integration and economic growth**

In a diplomatic transfer that reinforces Brazil’s role in Latin America, President Luiz InĂ¡cio Lula da Silva recently traveled to Buenos Aires, Argentina, where he officially assumed the temporary presidency of Mercosur. The ceremony marked another important stage in the history of regional integration, highlighting Brazil’s efforts to promote economic cooperation, trade facilitation, and stronger ties among member countries. Brazil assumes the presidency of Mercosur at a strategic moment, both for the bloc and for the national economy. What is Mercosur and Why is it Important? Mercosur (Southern Common Market) is an economic bloc created in 1991 with the goal of economically and politically integra...

Trump and His Lies, Tax Wars: Brazil and the World Were Taxed

Brazil's trade deficit with the United States: an unequal relationship: Despite being one of the largest economies in Latin America, Brazil maintains an unbalanced trade balance with the United States. According to data released by O Globo, in 2024 Brazil imported about $ 44 billion in American products, while Brazilian exports to the US added only $ 42 billion. That is, the country closed the year with a commercial deficit of approximately $ 2 billion.   This result puts Brazil among the few business partners that maintain an unfavorable relationship with the United States. In practical terms, it means that Brazil buys more than it can sell to the US market, something that aggravates external dependence and reduces the competitiveness of national industry.   In addition, the deficit occurs even in sectors where Brazil has export tradition, such as agribusiness and mining. Factors such as technical barriers, sanitary requirements and, especially, Trump's tariff wars...
